What a great time of year to serve a patriotic, historically native North American fruit in a cool and creamy British born dessert.  Well, at least the Pilgrims would have loved this one!

Simple to make, you’ll need:

2 pints of strawberries, sliced lengthwise, reserving 10 largest pieces to decorate top of trifle
1 cup blueberries
1 large Angel food cake, torn into 1″ pieces
1 qt of heavy whipping cream
1 cup sugar
1Tbs vanilla

1 large box vanilla instant pudding (optional)

In a blender, whip 1/2 the cream, sugar and vanilla.  Using a large trifle bowl,  layer 1/4 of the cake pieces, top with 1/4 of the strawberries and blueberries making sure they show from the outside of the bowl and top berries with whipped cream. Keep alternating layers,  making another batch of cream in blender, until final layer is whipped cream.  Decorate with strawberry slices and sprinkle with blueberries,  of desired for a great patriotic look.

Note: If you prefer a heavier dessert,  add a layer of instant vanilla pudding, prepared according to package directions, before each layer of the whipped cream.

We make this for BBQ’s and functions for Memorial Day festivities and for the fourth of July!  Great summer dessert.
